The veggie solution!

Let's face it veggies can be boring and a little bland. Sometimes we could use a little imagination to get our kids (and ourselves!) eating healthier. I found this particular gem in my Avon Living brochure a few months back and I absolutely love it, and so do the kids!

This is Avon's version of the veggie spiral slicer! The tip has a metal prong and grips to hold the veggie of your choice as you twist it through the blades. Also the blades are on the inside so no little fingers will be cut in the process. It's a great way to make getting nutrition a little more fun. This works great for zucchini, yellow squash, cucumbers, and carrots (if they are big enough). You can use them as noodles for spaghetti, a fun new salad, or even as a side for your main course. My son loves being able to make the noodles for dinner!

You can find all sorts of veggie spiral slicers everywhere but I love the quality of avon products. And it goes right in the dishwasher! If you are interested in this particular spiral slicer it is currently priced at $ 12.99 at www.youravon.com/stephaniebabin

Sensational seasonings!

So if you are looking for a great way to involve your little ones in the kitchen, try making seasonings from scratch! It's a great way to let them help out without putting them in harms way.

Making seasonings from sratch serves many purposes. It can help with math (the different measurements required for each recipe), it will aid in coordination skills, as well as spice knowledge, and you can control how much sodium your family is eating!

There are so many seasoning blends we use without knowing. Chili powder, herbs deprovince, Italian seasoning, pizza seasoning, taco seasoning are all simple mixtures of seasonings that are most likely already in your pantry. There are many recipes for making these and other spice blends online for free. Also these recipes are easily manipulated to suit your own flavor profile (I prefer to addore garlic that called for). Here is the taco seasoning recipe that I use with my son. It seasons 1lb of meat very well.

  • 1tsp. Hot chili powder
  • 1tsp. Paprika
  • 1tsp garlic powder
  • 1tsp onion powder
  • 1/2tsp cumin
  • 1/2tsp oregano
  • 1/2tsp salt
  • 1/2tsp black pepper
Have fun and remember that every experience can be an opportunity to learn and grow!

Get em' choppin'

Now I know most mom's have experienced little eyes watching them as they chop fruits and veggies. They love to watch and want to help every chance they get. However if your child is young the thought of them holding a knife is terrifying. We want them to enjoy cooking but keep them as safe as possible.

Thankfully we live in a world full of wonderful inventions for all things. The kitchen is no exception. If you want to involve your children in the chopping process, I would suggest investing in a food prep set like this one from Avon.

Food prep set like this can safely be used by kids(under supervision of course) to create salsa recipes, fruit salad, and much, much more. The prep container catches all juices eliminating most messes. This particular set comes with safety handles for the graters and mandolin. That way we can protect those tiny fingers from the blades at all times.

So get to chopping with your little ones. They will love being able to be a bigger help in the kitchen!
